Over the years, man has developed different ways of sharpening objects – hard rough stones, sandpaper, metal surfaces, water stones, diamond stones, and recently, to the use of electric sharpeners and grinders.
Tool and machinery manufacturers are constantly devising ways and methods for a better and more comfortable life for humans.
One such company is Tormek, a Sweden company that focused on developing, engineering and producing sharpening tools and systems.
Advantages of Water Cooled / Wet Stone Grinder
Tormek has manufactured a series of sharpeners – T-2, T-4, T-7, and the latest T-8 water cooled sharpening system.
Upgraded from T-7, the Tormek T-8 Water Cooled Precision Sharpening System is its brilliant innovation.
As the name suggests, Tormek T-8 is a wet stone grinder that uses water to cool the tools/knives being sharpened.
It simply means no overheating of steel with continuous grinding. Praised by professional woodworkers and knife enthusiasts, it’s safe and reliable.
Tormek T-7 vs T-8
The Tormek T-8 has some useful upgrades from the commercial wet grinder T-7 that makes it an irresistible choice for professional woodworkers who want unmatched precision and sharpness.
The Tormek T-8 is an excellent sharpening system for sharpening tools with sharp edges, including the kitchen knives. It eliminates the need to dispose of or keep redundant sharp tools with blunt edges.

Tormek T-8 Sharpener Key Features
Zinc Alloy Housing
Tormek T-8 Electric Wet Stone Grinder offers the best quality for precision sharpening and it’s result orientated.
The T-8 is lighter with zinc alloy body housing (with two side plastic panels) as compared to T-7 which is made of steel. It’s sturdy to handle all kinds of sharpening tasks in addition to corrosion-resistant.
With its full zinc cast housing, it delivers maximum stability and precision sharpening.
The part that is made of stainless steel is the main shaft which holds the 10” grindstone. That’s where you’ll use it for most of the sharpening tasks.
The stainless steel main shaft comes with a unique Ezylock nut. The nut automatically sets stone to the right torque without using tools.
Universal Support and Integrated Sleeve Mounting
The foundation of the Tormek T-8 knife sharpener lies in the ‘F’ shaped Universal Support stainless steel bar. It controls all grinding jigs and accessories from coarse grinding to fine honing, flipping from vertical to horizontal mount.
Unlike the T-7 where the Universal Support mount was bolted onto the housing, it has now been integrated into the model T-8 as part of its fully cast housing.
This guarantees minimum play of the Universal Support, tight-controlled sharpening, and increased precision.
The Universal Support mounting improvement ensures no wobbling and vibration during sharpening. You’ll get a precise bevel angle on the tool’s edge.
At first glance, the ‘F’ shaped Universal Support may look simple with just an adjustable dial for bevel angle adjustment but this is what gives you the precision results. It can be mounted on either side of the grindstone (depending on the vertical or horizontal mount), either to grind towards or away from the rotating wheel.
Safety Stops Keep Tools In Place On The Stone
During the sharpening process, sliding movements may unintentionally cause the tool to slip pass the edge of the grindstone. This can be easily preventable.
Two stoppers (one with adjustable width) have been implemented on the Universal Support to limit the sliding width to prevent the tool from dropping off while the wheel is still rotating.
This will prevent unnecessary hand injury and tool damage. These stoppers make the entire tool and knife sharpening process much simpler and stress-free.
Angle Master – Setting The Exact Bevel Angle
The Angle Master WM-200 is used to set the exact sharpening angles of your tools (chisels, knives, and others) for optimum sharpness by adjusting the micro-dial on the Universal Support. It also includes setting for the grindstone size.
Both settings must match accordingly before the operation. Once done, it’ll deliver excellent results with scary sharpness and precision.
Constant Speed Motor
The Tormek T-8 sharpener operates at the same speed (90 rpm) regardless of the load it has to deal with. The advantage of this low-speed motor will prevent any unintentional grinding of steel as compared to the high-speed grinder.
The strong AC motor can power the grindstone through continuous use of 25,000 hours, maintenance-free. Pretty much you can use it for decades.
It’s safe and quiet.
Grit Convertible Grindstone
The 2” x 10” grindstone that is made from aluminum-oxide is amazing.
It comes with 220-grit for coarse grinding and can be converted to 1000-grit for fine polishing with the help of the stone grader. The stone grader is a two-sided silicon carbide stone for coarse to fine grit conversion and vice versa.
Once coarse grinding is completed, the next step is to polish the blade.
The grit conversion is pretty simple. To change the grit from coarse to fine, press the fine side of the stone grader against the rotating wheel back and forth for about 20 seconds.
The coarse grindstone is converted to grit 1000 without removing from the unit. You can feel the surface with the fingers.
The stone grader also serves to remove the glaze build-up on the grindstone.
To transform it back to 220-grit, repeat the exact step on the rough side of the stone grader. There’s no need to replace the grindstone.
It’s fast and straightforward.
Also, this grindstone can sharpen all types of steel, including HSS.
Improved Water Trough
The water trough has also experienced some improvements from the model T-7 – a screw lift and a double function magnetic scraper.
The screw lift makes for easier lifting up and down of the water trough with an adjustable knob.
And the double function magnetic scraper would enable easier and effective cleaning of the water trough. It both collects and cleans the steel particles in the trough.
Always remember to clear the water from the trough after each use.
You can also clip the included water chute onto the side of the water trough for long tools (planer blades and chef’s knives) that may drip water (extend over the edge of the grindstone).
Improved Square Edge Jig
The SE-77 Square Edge jig that comes with the T-8 has two adjustable knobs. It helps to create a camber on the tool’s edge should there be a need, especially on some plane blades for woodworking.
The T-7 does not have this feature though.
Let’s summarize the following components and its functions:
|Universal Support:||For vertical and horizontal mounts|
|Water Trough:||Built-in magnet for collection of particles and chute for drips of water|
|WM-200 Angle Master:||Sets and measures edge angles. Kept in place by magnets|

List of Pros and Cons
Is The Tormek T-8 Worth The Cost?
The T-8 wet stone grinder is by far the most expensive sharpening system by Tormek. But the thoughtful improvements over previous models give you greater value for the money.
Tormek T-8 always produces consistent results for plane irons, chisels, turning tools, carving gouges and knives. It’s rare to see such a quality sharpening system on the market but some folks were put off by the price.
However, the price is a perception of what it’s worth.
For woodworking enthusiasts who want sharp edges and consistent results all the time, the T-8 will worth every penny.
That’s quite amazing! It can be used to sharpen all your sharp objects, regardless of what quality of steel it is made from.
The results speak for themselves.
It is safe to use and the motor is rather quiet. This is a product that you are guaranteed to enjoy for a long time – 25 000 hour life! It also has a 7-year warranty.
Talk about durability!
You are saved the stress of having to set or switch stones. Cleaning this product also comes easy.
Having all its components in one-housing eliminates the bulkiness and makes for easier carriage.
For a weekend woodworking warrior, there are some cheaper alternatives you may want to consider – Grizzly 10″ Wet Grinder Kit and the WEN 10″ Variable-Torque Water Cooled Wet and Dry Sharpening System.
But that’s a limitation of what you’ll get in terms of quality and accessories.
I have no doubts that this would be the most beneficial sharpening system to own. It has all areas covered, you need little or no skill to get your tools sharpened.
Take steps to own the Tormek T-8 if you can afford and be on your journey to enjoying a seamless and stress-free sharpening process that results in a precise and smooth finish.
